Printed and signed 18th-century slave contract dated February 2, 1764. Sale for a negro man named Darby, 36 years old, for the sum of fifty-five pounds. Fifty-five pounds in 1764 were worth approximately $13,146.00 today.
Slavery was officially abolished in New York State on July 4, 1827, but at the time of this document, there were more slaves in New York than in any American city other than Charleston, South Carolina.
A rare document exhibiting the shameful history of discrimination, racism, and violence that was the order of the day in New York and other colonies.
