Three pairs of sailor-made sea chest handles—traditionally known as beckets and cleats—were once attached to a seaman’s personal chest. While functional, they also reflect the maker’s marlinspike seamanship and artistic skill. A sailor’s sea chest held nearly everything he owned or needed, and he often spent his spare time sitting atop it reading, writing home, or mending clothing. Elaborate beckets and cleats were a point of pride, showcasing a sailor’s craftsmanship and dedication to his trade.
