Period map titled "Attack of the Rebels upon Fort Penobscot" in the Province of New England, in which their fleet was destroyed and their army dispersed on the 14th of August, 1779.

In 1779, the British established Fort George at the entrance to the Penobscot River to protect their access to the timber resources of Maine and to establish a base from which to harass the Americans in northern New England. The Americans sent 40 ships and 2,500 men from Boston, including a 100-man artillery detachment under Paul Revere's command. Their goal was to reclaim mid-coast Maine from the British. This was the largest naval expedition of the war. Initially, the Americans were successful, but with the arrival of British reinforcements, they were forced to retreat and scuttle the ships that had not yet been captured.

This map is somewhat inaccurate in the location of Fort George, but it provides an interesting account of the battle.

Original copperplate print dated 1785.
Framed and glazed.
The condition is excellent with very minor foxing.
