Details

Shadowbox model of the American Clipper Ship Titan at sea. An impressive depiction of the Titan with a carved wooden hull, flags, and sails. A painted background with 3 sailing ships and clouds completes the dramatic seascape. The unknown maker has painted his initials, M.A., in the bottom far right corner. This large shadowbox, circa 1900, boasts a stunning hand-carved frame with vintage wavy crown glass; however, the frame is likely from a later period.

The Titan was built in 1855 in New York by Roosevelt & Joyce for the owners D.G. & W. Bacon of Boston. Her very first voyage was a charter carrying French Troops to Crimea. The London Times reported that "The Titan, the largest and finest ship in the world, has just returned from Crimea and will run in The White Star Line to Australia." She subsequently sailed to Melbourne and back. In 1857, she carried 6,900 bales of cotton from New Orleans to Liverpool, the largest cotton shipment by a sailing vessel up to that time. In the latter part of 1857, a gale off Liverpool forced her to cut away her main and mizzen masts. With her foremast intact, she made her way into Liverpool. The next year, she was abandoned at sea.
