Authentic vintage Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Special Agent badge with a leather badge wallet. Railroad police in the 1930s and 1940s were specialized, company-paid law enforcement officers. Commonly known as "railroad bulls," they primarily deterred freight theft, guarded cargo, and forcibly removed hobos from boxcars during the Great Depression and World War II. In the 1940s, the railway police's duties shifted toward guarding vital infrastructure, including bridges and tunnels, against saboteurs. They were also crucial in securing shipments and overseeing the transport of hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war.
