Aluminum twin-telescope binoculars engraved, Lady Eileen Browne (Countess Stanhope).
Born in 1899, Lady Eileen was the eldest daughter of the 6th Marquess of Sligo and married James Richard, the 7th Earl of Stanhope, on April 16, 1921. She devoted her life to supporting her husband throughout his distinguished career in parliament and the civil service.
The binoculars also bear the inscription Westport House, Mayo—the Browne family’s ancestral estate for more than 380 years. Situated near Westport in County Mayo, the 400-acre property is celebrated as one of Ireland’s most beautiful homes and is recognized as a national landmark with origins dating back to the 1500s.
Crafted by the renowned firm Negretti & Zambra—holders of Queen Victoria’s royal warrant as “Opticians to the Queen”—these binoculars reflect the highest standard of early 20th-century instrument making. At the time, aluminum was a costly material, reserved for only the finest scientific equipment.
The instrument survives in excellent condition with minimal wear, including a noted ¼-inch opening along the leather seam on the underside near the sunshades (as pictured).
