An antique French coin changer's scale, technically known as a trébuchet. During the 18th and 19th centuries, coins derived their actual value from the weight of their precious metal. Shaving metal off the edges of coins was a common fraud, making a portable scale necessary to check a coin's legal mass against official standards.
This example is complete with all its nested weight cups and a slide compartment containing individual geometric poids (small brass squares). It retains its original beam scale with hanging pans. Because the printed chart lists the franc system (20- and 40-franc pieces), this set can be dated to the French Directoire or early Napoleonic Era, circa 1795-1815. During this transitional phase in French history, merchants needed kits like this to navigate the overlap between old royal coins and the new post-revolutionary money.
