John Henry Mohrmann was a sailor and marine painter who was born in Germany on December 16, 1857, and emigrated with his family to San Francisco at the age of two. In 1870, he ran away from home and mustered on as a cabin boy, spending the next 18 years as a sailor. With the combination of maritime and artistic knowledge, he became a ship portraitist. In 1884, Mohrmann moved to Antwerp, where he took orders for marine paintings from ship owners, captains, and other officers. The quality of the painting often depended on what the client was willing to pay.
