Details
This is a remarkable piece of San Francisco maritime history, a scarce and original 30-inch life-ring from the Steamer Tamalpais. Built by Union Iron Works in 1901 and operated by North Pacific Coast, North Shore, and Northwestern Pacific lines, she was a side-wheeler with a steel hull, weighing 1631 tons and powered by a compound marine engine with 2100 HP. This distinguished artifact is a tangible connection to the Golden Gate's storied past.
She was 224 feet long, with a 36-foot beam and a 16-foot draft. After 46 years of service transporting passengers around the San Francisco Bay, she was burned for scrap.
Constructed from canvas and filled with kapok, with an original painted old surface. The backside has a stable tear approximately 5 1/2 inches by 3 inches, as shown in the second photograph.
