Exceptional 1942 Schrader Leather Diving Boots

An outstanding pair of World War II–era leather diving boots manufactured by Schrader in 1942. The inner oak soles bear the engraved maker’s name and date, while the heavy brass toe caps are stamped with U.S. Navy inspection marks and the designation ARS-34 (USS Gear). Notably, the Navy only applied inspection marks to dive boots for a short period during the war, making this pair particularly scarce. The leather remains supple, with all original laces and buckles intact and unbroken. In over four decades of maritime antique dealing, this is the finest example I have encountered.

Historical Note – USS Gear (ARS-34):
USS Gear was a Diver-class rescue and salvage ship commissioned during World War II. Her mission was to aid damaged vessels, and she distinguished herself with 13 battle stars earned in major operations, including Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. In addition to combat support, Gear performed vital salvage, towing, and repair duties throughout the war, later serving with the Alaskan Sea Frontier before decommissioning in 1946.
