Details

Ophthalmophantome, or eye phantom, is an antique surgical tool, crafted in brass and steel, that was essential for training ophthalmologists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Operators practiced with animal eyes placed in the sockets before performing surgery on human patients. Known as Waldau's Phantom Face (c. 1890-1930), this educational tool was used in surgical demonstrations. It is a metal mask with eye sockets that have coils and spikes for mounting animal eye specimens.
